if it works AT ALL, it's a software issue, or rather it's likely a firmware issue, something stored in the parameter ram. Try resetting the PRAM: boot while holding the command, option, p and r keys down. It will do the boot chime, then do it again. Tradition holds that letting it 'bong' three times fixes what ails it.
