I had already tried disconnecting the PRAM battery before sticking the new 
inverter in.  And I did not disconnect the PRAM battery in the process of 
installing the new inverter.  The only thing that has changed is the 
inverter.

I agree that it sounds like a software issue.  Or perhaps a firmware issue.  
But changing the inverter fixed it (I hope) so I suppose all's well that 
ends well.  It's still baffling though.  As I said, I used a Lombard 
inverter and the backlight stayed on as well.  I swear the screen isn't as 
bright as it was before.  But that could be my imagination.  After all, 
laptop displays do darken over time.
