Thank you for your reply.  I already tried resetting the parameter
RAM.  At least a dozen times.  It made no difference.  That was the
first thing I tried.  I too, thought it was a software issue.  But I
couldn't find any software to change.  It happened on multiple OS 10
versions as well as OS 9.

Eventually I gave up and purchased some replacement inverters.  So
far, so good.  But I swear the screen brightness, even at the highest
setting, is less bright than it was before.  Regardless, the backlight
seems to work.

I'm still concerned it may be a software issue.  I also tried
resetting the power manager (PMU) on multiple occasions and it didn't
make any difference.

I'm hoping the new inverter fixes it.  But it still seems like such an
odd manifestation.
