Strictly speaking, a number of competing 802.11n proposed standards have been 
around for a few years, but I believe the actual approved 802.11 standard is 
less than a year old.

People complaining about getting stuff approved by the App Store have obviously 
never participated in an ISO standard creation.  You could literally spend a 
career just shepherding one through from proposal to acceptance and 
publication...
