What OS? 

Very first thing to do is to shine a flashlight at the screen after it's 
'booted' if that's what it is doing. If you can see the desktop, then the issue 
is the backlight, which is a moderately difficult, but doable job on a Pismo, 
and cheap, the replacement part is about $15-$20.

Next, as you suspected, is attach an external monitor, see what you get. If you 
get blank desktop, but no image in the laptop, that means the system is 
running, but the screen is dead; a disconnected cable or dead LCD. Attach a USB 
keyboard and mouse, close the lid to put it to sleep, then wake it with the 
keyboard; you should have the full desktop on the external monitor.

If it fails at these steps, then the issue is a problem with the logic 
board...even a failed boot should put something up on the screen.
