Good News. The machine is repaired. It wasn’t the usual suspects, at least not the ones I suspected: screen, PRAM battery.
It was instead that the baggage handers had jarred it in such a way that the processor board became ever so slightly unseated. I should have figured it out right away: this is a machine that has had that board out a few times for upgrades.
