Hi Cam I have a 32GB 2·5-inch PATA SSD in my 400MHz Pismo. It works brilliantly - boot time and application launch times were cut by about a third. The SSD’s brand is ‘KingSpec’ and I bought it from UK eBay.
Dead simple to install, so long as you’re happy opening up your Pismo. (You should be able to find instructions on iFixit. If not, I may have them lying about somewhere.) Once it’s in, boot from your installer CD/DVD and install as normal. Alternatively, if you trust your original HD’s system is intact and have a naked hard drive attacher (something like http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812232002&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&AID=10446076&PID=4003003&SID=2t05x1b3uw2t), you can use CarbonCopyCloner (from bombich.com) to copy the existing system (OS, apps, data, everything) bit by bit to the new SSD. Then put the SSD into the Pismo and it should fly straight away. I’ve no idea about CF adaptors - I recall trying but never found an an adaptor and card combo that worked for me.
