Thanks for all the suggestions. Even though it was not a G-book question. 
This is list is very helpful.

I am intimidated by all I have learned on this topic. It seems that the 
penalties for not upgrading are pretty significant. I think we will favor 
buying a new or recent MBP or Air, and run the most modern version of Word 
she can tolerate.

I'm a bit amazed at this decision. I have two machines myself. One is the 
biggest MBP made and is keep current in all respects. The other is a Pismo 
running Tiger that I do as much writing on as I can. Doesn't seem to be any 
sweet spot in the middle for my partner.
