It's rather hard to calibrate LCD screens in general and, to my
knowledge, no one's found a completely satisfactory manner to do this
on any platform. Everyone I know who depends on color calibration
(the hi-res color retouchers at the ad agency I used to work for,
others who are just picky about such things) refuse to use LCD
monitors for just this reason. These are the same people who walk by
my cube and tell me that my monitor is "too hot" and that I should
recalibrate... then 45 minutes later tell me it's "too cold" even
though I haven't done anything about it. :)
At any rate, to "calibrate your monitor" is meaningless. It's really
a matter of _what_ you calibrate it to. We had everyone calibrate
their displays to the 4 color linotronics press at the print shop we
sent our jobs to, but another company may calibrate to a Color
LaserWriter 12/600PS... which is dubious at best, since color laser
printers of any brand have rather inconsistent color from toner
cartridge to toner cartridge. Another group my calibrate their
displays to an input device, such as a scanner, rather than to a
printer. When we calibrate our displays to the lino press, color
looks a little off kilter if we print to a color laser printer or a
color inkjet.
