Any 802.11b compatible WAP will function with an 802.11b NIC, such as the Airport card or others. A Residential/Broadband Gateway (also known as a cable/DSL router) is a wired device that sits between your broadband access and your internal network. These typically offer only a few ethernet ports, but include Firewall and other features that allow you to protect your internal network. Again, most are configurable via web browsers. Some devices, like Apple's Airport, or Linksys BEFW11S4 combine features of both of these offering wireless access of WAP's and the router/firewall protections cable routers.
