I was wondering if you could place small rubber pads at the hinge side of the screen to keep it raised high enough for the keyboard to clear the screen when the book is closed? I see my Pismo has two spots on either side of the hinge where this seems to be a possibility.
Also, I rarely have this problem with me Pismo (you can sometimes barely see the edge of the A/Z rows of keys) which leads me to believe that some PowerBooks have a tighter fit when closed than others, or my rubber stops at the top of my screen are doing a better job than most.
