With the AC adapter, there's a fast 'clicking' coming from the speaker, which is much slower when on battery power, right?
If you remove the HD and then refit it, does the computer then start OK? This sounds like exactly the problem I had intermittently when my Wallstreet had its original 4Mb drive, and all the time with its new 40Mb drive. There's a magnet in the display at the right which operates a sensor in the body of the computer when the lid is down, so that the computer knows when the lid is closed and so goes into sleep mode. Imagine what would happen if the computer always thought it was in sleep mode - won't wake up from sleep, and wouldn't start up because the lid is closed. I guess that the magnet in the new HD isn't strong enough to make the sensor in the computer think the lid is closed, but it is strong enough to maintain that sensor state once the lid has been closed, even if the lid is now open. The cure - tape a bit of thin steel to the right hand edge of the HD so that, when the drive is inserted back in the machine, the strip of steel is between the drive magnet and the sensor, so acting as a magnetic shield.
