It all comes down to this: The school doesn't want to attempt to spend money to buy computer labs that everyone can use, irregardless of platform, and would much rather have students spend money on something the school isn't paying for. I seem to remember that back when they announced this program they made it sound like the laptop was being included in the cost of admission. Obviously, now that there isn't any money (while there are federal subsidies, Ryan, it's more state, and they just took $108 million from the UW System) they're charging for them. I think it's stupid too. Oh, and the information pages about it say "Do not consider not applying to UW-Stout based on this program." Hmph. Add to that, the $500 figure looks too low. That's $36 a credit, according to their website, and that divides down to about 14 credits. Most students have 16-17, making it morel like $600. Hopefully, Thomas, your daughter has filed a FAFSA and has some or enough financial aid to cover for it. And remember, there's nothing wrong with transferring!
And BTW, this probably would not be implemented at most of the other UW schools. They all have a pretty large infrastructure that allows computer labs everywhere on campus - making computer access universal - and the need for laptops gone.
