Don't actually know. I usually run my Pismo from a power cord and
don't exercise battery life often.

Well the Energy Saver control panel lets you set 
  * computer sleep (1 minute to never)
  * display sleep  (1 minute to never)
  * "spin down hard drive when possible)

And also offers the following "preset" options:
  Custom
  Automatic
  Highest Performance
  Longest Battery Life
  DVD Playback
  Presentations

Don't yet know how well they work, but it looks promising
