Short answer: Yes, it is possible. Long answer: It's possible for some things but not for others.
I have an IBM FireWire PC Card for my Wallstreet. I use it to connect my iPod. You can get one for $30 or so. Orange Micro also makes one but it's about $80. The disadvantage to a FireWire card is that it can't provide bus power. So you can't plug in a pocket hard drive and have it just work, you have to also use an AC adapter, which is a hassle. Lucky for me, the iPod has a battery, so it doesn't need bus power. But it doesn't automatically recharge through the FireWire port either. The IBM card I got has two very thin ports on it and a special cable attaches to either of those ports. 6-pin and 4-pin FireWire cables are provided. Anyway, there are some problems getting an iPod to work with FireWire cards in OS 9, but it works fine in OS X.
