I don't know if this would be possible, but might it be? Could a 
battery be custom built to include a bus-powered FireWire/USB/USB2 
port? Then you could just pop in the battery and have instant 
bus-powered ports, and you'd still have your PC card slot free for 
something else. You would be able to turn the bus power on or off for 
each individual port to maximize battery life, because you wouldn't 
want power going to a port you don't use.
