If she is planning on scanning in many photos or slides, I would suggest using VueScan. I don't know the URL off hand, but you can search for it at versiontracker.com. It is said to be the best in it's category. It is updated often. Using it is the only way I can scan in OS X with my scanner. Not that I have used it other than to see if it works though :)
