There is a firmware update hack on xlr8yourmac that will make the DVD player on a Pismo region free, which I have done on one of my Pismos. There is a disclaimer with the update that stated "use at your own risk", because there is a risk of really messing up the DVD player. It worked perfectly for me, but there is no guarantee!
You will have to search the site for the update, as I can not remember where is was when I downloaded it!
