I swapped HDs on my old Lombard with a 20 GB IBM and had to send the 
'Book back through AppleCare once for a bad Ethernet port and they 
didn't seem to mind my upgrade.

I put my old drive in a VST case and it worked nice. Although, I think 
you just listed your own pros and cons;)
