There's another option if you don't want to use the control strip. Go to the control panel which controls the menu bar clock (um... I forget which one it is. Date & Time or maybe General Controls... it's been a long time since I used OS 9!). You can tell it to display your battery status next to the menu bar clock as well -- it shows a little icon with a small arrow next to the vertical position indicating battery charge -- top is full, bottom is empty. A lightening bolt indicates AC power.
