Since OS X automatically assigns more to a program as it needs it you don't run out of memory or such but it does impact speed. But since I have no grounds for comparison I can't say if 512K total (that is the max) will make a noticeable difference. I have felt that with many programs launched it does seem slower but it's highly subjective.
