I'm sure it was a CPU thing. They probably got faster rated chips from Moto, but had to downgrade the CPU bus to match the multiplier. (ie a 250 @ 83 x 3 vs a 300 at 66 x 4.5) the 83Mhz bus speed was probably actually too big a chump for the CPU speed at the time, and the G3 might not have supported a 3.5x multiplier.

Me too. I've got a WS w/ the 83 bus. It just feels really zippy for a 250Mhz
machine. The WS II and Lombard both went 66MHz. Then the Pismo went 100Mhz bus.
Seems like a step forward, then back, then two forward.
