Many thanks to everyone who replied with a lot of helpful info. Helped me
step back and look at the choices better.

I've been looking at old powerbook prices and parts down here. They aren't
cheap. A Pismo 500Mhz is around AU$1100 which is not far from a PowerBook
G4/867 (AU$1700) these are discounted sale prices too. Both are low ram
machines so there will be an upgrade costs (192 MB doesn't cut it for
Panther.)

I could probably get another Lombard for around AU$ 580 - that way I could
use my current Llombard's ram, hard drive & dock. But the shadow of
another critical part burnout is a major risk - frying another few hundred
$$$. The same goes for buying an used pmu - plus the sweaty brow ordeal of
installing it. Another issue is if future OSes will supported the hardware
- OS 10.4? (maybe xfacto will pull me through :)

I wonder if it is simply better to save and get a fully warranteed G4 pb.
I guess its getting a machine now vs later question...
