This is a bit long. I've patched this info together, over a year or
two, from posts I've seen on the subject. Maybe worth your saving for the
days when _you_ can't delete a file/folder/etc.

I've left in the info on quitting programs that won't quit as well as
trashing items that refuse to be trashed.

For the first time, last week, the only thing that would delete a file
that was interrupted mid-download was the "dragging the file to TexEdit"
solution.

    Hope folks find this useful.

TRASH/KILL SOLUTIONS
First look for help at Randy Singer's page:
http://www.macattorney.com/panther.html

DELETE SOLUTIONS
------------------
1. Open Terminal
2. Type sudo rm -rf (or try just >sudo rm<)
3. Add a space after the "f", then drag the item you want deleted to the
terminal so that its path is automatically entered.
4. Press return, type in your password then hit return again.
------------
Other method to try is trashing while holding down the Shift+Option keys and
Control Clicking on the trash can.
----------------
OR..create folder, put offending item in folder, move folder to trash, empty
trash holding down Shift + Option keys while emptying trash.
--------------
Another method for getting rid of a PDF or text file that is "being used",
is to drag the file icon to TextEdit. In TextEdit choose Select All and then
hit the Delete key and Save. Close the file. Now you should be able to trash
it
---------
Reboot in OS 9, drag items to be trashed out of your OS X trash, put them
into a new folder and drag that folder onto your OS 9 partition. Then, the
next time you re-boot in OS 9, you can drag that folder to the OS 9 Trash,
hold down the Option key and empty the trash, and they will be gone forever.
-------
Finally, try FileVaporizer (get from VersionTacker. It seems to trash just
about everything. "What FileVaporizer does to files which you wish to erase
is to first write over them with random data and then delete them, thus
making them unrecoverable."

***KILL SOLUTIONS***
--------------
Try to quit from Process Viewer by
1. Laundh Process Viewer (Utilities folder)
2. Locate App. you can't quit in listing to left
3. Click to highlight
4. Hit Command+option+Q
5. In resulting dialog choose Quit
6. If that doesn't do it, repeat process but
    this time, choose Force Quit.
-----------
1. Launch terminal and type "top" then Return key
2. Note the PID number of the App that won't quit.
3. Open a new Terminal window (Command + N)
4. Type kill <PID #> if no luck try
5. kill -9 <pid#>
--------------
If you hold both the option key and the control key while clicking an
application's icon in the Dock, the "force quit" command will be available
no matter what the program's status.
