Airport Extreme is like a circle within a circle; inside the smaller
circle you get high speed reception and when you step outside
that your speed drops to 802.11b speeds.

Understand 100%, but roughly, what are the radiuses (however the plural of radius is spelt ?!) of these circle going through wooden walls and stuff ?

radii is the plural of radius.

Higher bandwidth will be more affected by signal degradation than lower.

Wooden walls would not block radio waves a whole lot. My house is all concrete block, and my Airport Base Station is reachable from everywhere in it.

Metal, such as reinforcing rods in concrete, conduits, plumbing and wiring in regular walls and buildings constructed of steel framing are going to cause greater range problems than wood.

Haven't really seen how far outside I can pick it up, but it's near a window and exterior wall, it should be a fair distance.

Do extra antennas on the basestation make a big difference ?

Yes they do. Do be careful, however as you can run afoul of whatever your local equivalent of the FCC is if you cause interference with other systems.

People have achieved quite long ranges with modified base stations., but the tradeoff is directionality. The farther you want to go, the more directional your antenna must be. (google 'cantenna' or 'pringles can antenna' for lots of DIY solutions.)
