All (and I do mean all) spam these days fakes the from address
Actually only about 30% are fake addresses. Which bounce back to
me. 70% don't bounce back to me.
There's a difference between faking the from address, and BEING fake
addresses. For example, if a spammer sent out spam that looked like
it came from [EMAIL PROTECTED], then they have faked the from
address - but haven't used a fake address, as it is mine.
If then 1000 people decide to bounce that spam, it enters the inbox
of a genuine person being me. That 70% of emails don't bounce back to
you doesn't mean 70% are real addresses, as some domains have a
catchall - *ALL* mail going to them will enter someone's email
address, even if it's not a person on that machine.
Another danger of bouncing all email is that one day you'll start
bouncing email back to others who automatically bounce email as well,
setting up a loop that continually sends email between yourselves and
gradually gains in size the more fake email you get. Soon enough
you're bouncing megabytes and megabytes of email between one another
and wondering why email is slowing down.
Anybody can put anyone else's email address in the From: field of
emails they send out, even other people's genuine email addresses. A
spammer might send spam some day with a faked "From:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]" (or other genuine email address you own). It would
be a faked address, but all bounces to those 6 million spams would
would go directly to you - just bouncing is a bad idea, and doesn't
hurt the spammers one little bit.
