Tom: I did the Windows to Mac switch about 7 months ago. I was so impressed with the desktop transition that I bought a used 12" iBook also. My reasons for buying it are much like yours...I wanted to wirelessly access the internet at home and office and I use it primarily for writing.
The heat factor was a bit troublesome at first. But, I bought a set of laptop bumpers from www.bodelin.com and that helped both the heat issue and ergonomics. I understand your concern for the issue of problems after a few months. While I only have 7 months under my belt with this new/used machine, I believe it to very solid. I use my approximately 4 hours a day, primarily on battery and have had absolutely no problems with it. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one just like it.
