I have two white ibooks, one a G3 500 and the other a G4 1gig. I love them to bits. I replaced the video cable on the old one, which is how it came to be mine in the first place.

But I treat my little lalptop like it's made of egg shells. It goes nowhere without it's little padded case. I don't type and eat. I don't leave it where it might fall and I never leave it in the car. I think laptops are generally rather fragile things.

I have heard some stories of bad boards and some systemic problems but the two I've had (the 500 is now with my daughter in Chicago) are quite reliable.

That said I think that the days of the SE/30 and it's longevity are gone. I still have three compact Macs that run like champs. New PRAM battery every three years and that's it. Hardware, and particularly laptops, just don't run that way these days. So eventually what you get is going to die. So my advice is to go ahead and get a relatively new iBook, but back it up fastidiously.

I have a 1400 - too slow on the Internet. I bought a
Clamshell iBook. I liked it, but somehow my daughter
ended up with it.

Then I bought a severely upgraded wallstreet, now a
g4-500, and while I love the way it works, I dislike
both the size and the heat factor. As a writer, I feel
distracted by the heat coming up through my fingers.

I have heard the Pismos run much cooler.

I want small size, battery longevity, cool running,
wireless ability (doesn't have to be built-in as long
as I can add on).

I love those 12" white iBooks and would buy a used one
of those in a heartbeat, except I keep running into
people who are having repair nightmares with them.

Do pismos really run a lot cooler than wallstreets?

Are the white iBooks really just waiting to die? I
just don't want to spend $350-$450 on a 12" iBook and
have the logic board go after a few months.

Would like to hear comments from any other users on
the above.
