I do not recommend Microsoft Anti Spyware since it is a hog of the
software world, and it caused problems on my home machine and our work
servers. If you are going to donload things download Lavasoft Adaware,
and also get rid of any norton or Mcafee virus scan and protection and
configure windows firewall correctly an download Avast antivirus, our
computer has run like a dream since and we have been running those two
programs as our main defense for at least 8 months with no crashes or
conflicts, or restarts.
I would always recommend a Mac above any pc since right now these are
not daily headaches.

An interesting statement since all Windows versions
prior to NT including 98 and ME ran on top of a DOS
shell. (Current versions run on top of NT)
Stuart -
I wouldn't worry over a warranty tampering sticker on
the mouse for an instant. I agree... quite a stupid
place to put one. Quite frankly, if anything serious
happened to the mouse that a cleaning wouldn't fix, it
would likely be cheaper to buy a replacement than to
send the old one back under warranty for repair.
(Faster too ;-) )
As for your virus and spyware issues... Yes, Windows
machines are riddled with them. Spyware is becoming
an increasingly alarming threat. Macs don't have most
of these issues (for now, though I imagine it's
coming) but remember that while I agree that Windows
machines have faults you don't find on Macs, so is the
reverse true.
Anyway... a couple pieces that may help you; If the
system has become unstable due to Spyware, download
and run the "big three" spyware removers... Spybot
Search and Destroy, Adaware by Lavasoft, and
Microsoft's Anti-Spyware Beta. All of these utilities
are free downloads and can be found with a quick
google search. Make sure you update the dat files for
each before running them. Each one will find stuff
the others won't, though I think the Microsoft one is
probably the most robust (from experience). Run all
three. Then see how your performance is. Of
course... there's a catch 22... to run them, you need
to be able to download them and download DATs which a
lot of times the Spyware prevents.
Beyond that, there are otehr programs like "Hijack
This" and a few others that let you delve into spyware
infection at the registry level and try to clean it
from there. If you aren't savy with registry
modification, I don't recommend this as it is a quick
way to break your machine. Usually, when they reach
this point, I recommend that the owner back up their
data files (including emails and favorites and
whatnot), then reinstall teh OS and restore the data.
Keep in mind with Spyware, however, it's only a matter
of time before it happens again. If your friend is
running Windows 2000 or Windows XP, he can prevent
Spyware infection dramatically by runnign a secure
profile. Otherwise, he's a sitting duck.
If you want help with the secure profile thing, email
me off list. I recently created a "how to" document
for the staff here at our company and would be happy
to share it with you. (It's in Word format.)
