OK, I have been noticing that this is a fairly common mystery, and here is my twist:

With my original 6gb drive in my Pismo, I put an Airport card in it and it was working perfectly, using either System 9.2.2 or OSX10.3 which I set up in different partitions.

Then I upgraded to a 30gb drive (not easy) and the Airport card works fine with System 9 but doesn't want to work with my freshly installed OSX 10.3. I also updated the Airport driver to 4.2, like the update told me to but still no go. If in OSX I go to the Airport icon on the upper right, it tells me that the card is on. But if I go to Apple Profiler it tells me the card is turned off. Argh.

Try turning the card off and then back on using the menu.

What about System Preferences and Internet Connect, how do they see the card?

So it is now my intention to put back my original drive and study what has changed.

Unfortunately, whereas I know System 9 like the back of my hand, I am a relative newcomer to OSX. If any of you OSX experts can provide me with a systematic checklist of stuff I should be looking for in all those panes and permissions and whatnot, no stone or clue will be unturned and I will post my findings here and perhaps we can all benefit from them.
