So, my PC100 High-Density 256MB DIMM arrived today. I opened the shipping
carton and saw the ESD bag which had the product label - "256MB PC100H -
g32x64s-pc100H" - which means PC100 256MB high density RAM dimm inside.

However, I'm not sure that the store sent me the right part... ;-) Inside
the bag the RAM chip had PC133 on it.

It is common practice to sell PC100 RAM such that you are guaranteed *at
least* PC100, meaning *either* PC100 and PC133 could be supplied at the
*seller's sole option*.

This reduces the seller's cost, and that lower *cost* is most often passed on
to you through a lower *price*.

As usual, there is sometimes no relationship between *cost* and *price*.

And as usual, there is sometimes no relationship between *performance* (PC66,
PC100 and PC133, e.g.) and *price*.

Right now, true PC66 RAM costs more than PC100 and PC133 RAM, due to
production considerations.

If you must have a specific RAM type, such as true PC66 or true PC100, then
expect to pay more for it.

OTOH, so-called high density RAM cannot be accommodated by some mobos. And
one solution to this problem is a chip on the RAM stick itself which makes
the mobo believe that the RAM is actually lower density. This RAM is
sometimes significantly lower cost than RAM which does not incorporate this
chip.

Some mobos cannot accommodate RAM sticks which incorporate this chip.

"The usual suspects" (i.e., exceptions) are those esoteric mobos, such as the
last versions of the pre-G3 mobos, and the ANS mobos.
