Then Earthlink has improved some. I was told (from a friend right in the
horse's mouth) last year that they had some kind of fantastic number of
tech support request messages--I forget what it was, but a rough guess:
something like 35,000!--needing response and that there was little hope of
ever catching up. I think Earthlink grew too fast to be able to keep up
with sufficiently trained support personnel. Anyway, the advice I received
last year was to always use the telephone when needing help from Earthlink.
I used Earthlink prior to going to cable, and overall was satisfied--
except for Usenet, where they frequently lost posts or were down
completely. If I'd kept the service, I was thinking about subscribing to
Newsguy or something like that; after thinking that way, cable service
began to look pretty cheap!
Road Runner works well except for mail, where it is extremely poor and
unreliable, especially compared to Earthlink. Fortunately, there's mac.com
for mail, and the download times are so fast I still sometimes can't
believe that the computer has even made the connection; I am often
surprised to find my downloads sitting in the download folder later.
(They've gotten there by magic, I'm sure of that!)
