I have had very good luck with Maxtor HD's in the Beige G3 (and other Mac's)
It is very easy to install..
Since you have a Rev A G3 you have to replace your HD, that means you keep
the jumpers set as Master (which is how it ships from the factory).
I would first plug it into your CD IDE cable so you can have just the two
HD's connected temporally, first initialize the drive with Drive Setup, and
then transfer all your data over before replacing the 4GB drive.
As for the Drive itself, I would be sure to get a 7200rpm drive and whatever
size you want.
40Gb seems to be about the best deal now, you should be able to get a 20GB
for under $100, a 30GB for around $120, and a 40GB for under $150 (actually
if you check pricewatch you can see some for $130 including shipping)
