I'm upgrading a B&W G3 300 in anticipation of OS X 10.1 in September.
(Currently, I'm at 9.1.) With memory now unbelievably cheap, I just maxed it
out at 1 GB and am considering a G4 ZIF upgrade. I'd like some feedback:

1) With the memory maxed, virtual memory shows as being off, even though it's
turned on. With 1 GB, I'm not concerned about needing VM, per se. But does
this mean the "modern memory manager" is not functioning? Will this lead to
less efficient memory management? More conflicts? Leaks and, so on? For
example, Mac OS is now using 91+ MB and growing. With VM on, it generally
stayed at ~36 MB.

2a) It looks like more and more things are taking advantage the G4 (IBM's
ViaVoice, VPC, OS X, itself...). But, which upgrade to get? The Newer G4 400
is the cheapest, by 15 to 20%. But, I'm concerned that this upgrade has no
future, since it requires a firmware update to run and Newer is out of
business. Suppose OS X 10.2 introduces a change that breaks the firmware? One
alternative brand, the Sonnet Encore/ZIF, claims to work without updating the
firmware (though it does need some sort of "software" to run).

2b) Are a lot of people on the list using G4 upgrades in the B&Ws? Were they
worth it? Does the Sonnet really work with vanilla ROM v1.1f4?

3) I installed Netscape 4.78, last night. It ran OK for a while, but then quit
with a "1,011" error (and said I should restart, which I've yet to do). Just
*what* is a 1,011 error? A conflict with the Lockheed-Martin extension? Ideas?
