After dealing with an "unstable" Beige G3/266 (Rev. 1) for many, many months,
involving warranty replacement of three motherboards, two "intermediate"
(modem) boards and one CPU/cache board, Apple finally replaced my entire
machine with a Beige G3/300 (Rev. 3).
The problem is most likely the CPU/cache, not the motherboard.
My /266's service history is as follows:
Service Order #1: replace motherboard and intermediate board. Result: still
intermittent.
Service Order #2: replace motherboard and intermediate board. Result: still
intermittent.
Service Order #3: replace motherboard. Result: still intermittent.
Service Order #4: replace CPU/cache. Result: fixed.
Apple had apparently expended so much time and expense on this /266 that it
wanted it out of the loop entirely. I'm sure it's in a landfill right now.
The replacement /300 has been completely trouble-free.
