Good points. I'd also add, for those interested in upgrading a Yosemite,
that testing at www.barefeats.com showed that a good ATA/66 IDE controller
card in either the Yikes or Yosemite made them faster than Sawtooths in
sustained Writes (and often a LOT faster, as the Sawtooths had some "design
flaw", though the problem may have been fixed thru firmware by now; anyone
got any info on this?): e.g., the Yikes and Yosemite hit around 65MB/sec
sustained read and 45MB/sec sustained write, while the Sawtooth suffered in
the sustained write area (35MB/sec) - all figures refer to 2-drive Raid
arrays. Moral: if you are going to upgrade your Yosemite, an IDE controller
is a good idea, whether you have a Rev.1 logic board or not.
As to the G4 upgrades, I wanted to ask about the firmware patch for
Yosemites. Is it the same patch for EVERY G4 upgrade, regardless of
manufacturer? Does anyone know if there would be problems in installing a G4
Zif from a different manufacturer, after having already used a firmware
patch included with a previous G4 Zif upgrade?
Note: OWC is now selling G4/400 and G4/500 Zifs made by Motorola, saying
that they don't need any firmware patch. Are these Zif processors originally
intended for Apple G4's?
I am thinking of selling my G4/400 Zif upgrade (Metabox) currently installed
in my Yosemite Rev.1 - I got an offer for it and an XLR8 Carrier card from
someone interested in upgrading his 8600; the money would cover the cost of
OWC's Motorola G4/500 Zif. (N.B. and as I've been having problems with Open
Firmware on the Yosemite, perhaps due to the Metabox card, I wouldn't mind
selling it; and as the 8600 doesn't need a firmware patch, said problems
should be avoided on the buyer's Powermac).
This also with the idea of selling the whole kit and kaboodle (sp?) in the
very near future: that is, I'd like to install a NEW G4 Zif in the Yosemite
before selling it, as I wouldn't want to sell unstable goods (i.e., with the
Metabox mystery unsolved). I'd then use my Lombard PB as my main Mac until
next year, when a newer G4, perhaps multi-processor (with an eye to video
work) would be more affordable.
Sorry for the ramble, but any feedback on the G4 upgrade and firmware issue
would be greatly appreciated.
