A fiend is having modem problems with his Special Edition iMac DV. Here is
the note he sent. I'm at a loss as to what to suggest. Any thoughts? Here is
a snip from his note.

-------------------
I use the internal modem/56k and am a subscriber to AOL.
    I usually connect with a bps of 46000 to 48000k, and that's
consistent..until now...Thursday evening I connected at 26600...and have
stayed in that connection speed ever since...I have not changed any settings
whatsoever, or added/deleted any applications.
Today, I took my iMac to my office and connected to the internet
there...again, the connection speed is in the 24k-26.6k range...At the
office, I use an 8600power mac with it's 56k modem...it connected at 48k...I
have determined it isn't the phone lines that are the problem..
What could've have happened? Again, no changes made to the system..just
a slower connection speed...
-------------------

He lives an hour away so I don't want to tell him to start deleting
preference and changing things if I can't help him immediately, should he
lose any internet settings.

Any thought will be much appreciated.
