I've been holding out on upgrading for a long time now, the default browser
for 8.1 was Navigator 3 ! So, I'm eagerly awaiting 10.1. I'm certain that
most (if not all) the system errors I'm experiencing are related to OS 8.1,
especially the Open Transport bits of it.

I take it you mean a particular version of the OS ? Well, not always true, I
mean a piece of software is claimed to be backward compatible ("Mac OS 8.1 &
above" etc.), but unfortunately it would appear that if we want to use the
latest software versions, we need to keep our OS up to date.
