Same situation, but with the ultra scsi controller, 10/100 ethernet card and
second video card.

I think it was pretty much cost cutting, but I know they did the math and
for 90% of the people out there, 3 slots is just fine. And for the others
they usually wanted more than 6...

So I could understand the cutting it down to one machine with 3 slots
(instead of an 8600 type and a 9600) and letting th eones who need more
purchase a pci chassis for $1000.

Probably saved them insane amounts of money, in manufacturing, marketing,
the whole bit.
