My three sets of 256k RAM arrived from OWC, first alarm was they were
labelled PC133 & they should be PC100. I installed anyway, one bank at a
time then restart, and sure enough it was recognized by my beige G3 233 with
the original ROM Rev A! Whoo hoo! Apple specs say max ram is 192 MB and the
old work around was swapping out the ROM card for ROM RevB or C, but those
ROM cards are unavailable anymore. OWC has RAM chips that WORK, something
about being in banks of 16 instead of the newer 8 which is not recognized in
full. So..........problem solved. Your beige G3 (any model) WILL support
768k of RAM if you use the right RAM chip configuration, other Ram chips
won't deliver the full amount installed (usually registers half the Ram the
chip has). this is the Ram at OWC:
http://eshop.macsales.com/Catalog_Page.cfm?Parent=24&Title=G3%20and%20G4%20S
DRAM&Template= and today it is $6 per chip cheaper than I bought it Monday.
768k costs a total of less than $105 US and arrives at your door in two
days or less (mine came the next day). This is a REALLY GREAT DEAL! Thanks
to all who helped me figure this out! :) Bottom line is I have a totally
stock OEM beige "Gossamer" 233MZ desktop with the old ROM Rev A running 768k
of RAM with no modifications whatsoever other than the simple install of (3)
256k RAM chips from OWC. This is GOOD.
