Well, it could be just about that time. The old workhorse could be off to the virtual glue factory. I haven't been able to solve the recurring problem on my G4-upgraded Yosemite: after an app freezes, or a random system freeze (not running anything), or the computer refuses to wake from sleep, a hard restart or three is needed, though no disk is recognized and, at some point, the Mac will boot into Open Firmware. My local Mac dealer also thinks it may be the logic board, and if Apple replaces it, they say it'd cost $400-500. I'm going to try one more weekend of DIY solutions before sending it off to Apple for a checkup.
I seem to recall others on the list with B&W G3 Rev.1 logic board problems. Did anyone get them solved? Did anyone get the logic board replaced? Was it ridiculously expensive? Did anyone find that it was a different (and much cheaper!) problem? I've stuck so many new upgrades into the G3 that in the end (and I fear Apple may say so, too) it could be anything and it may be hard to pinpoint the problem. e.g., G4/400 Zif (Metabox), CDRW (Acer, internal IDE), VST Ultratek ATA/66 controller, IBM 60GXP 40GB HD, Adaptec 2906 SCSI card, ATI Nexus video card. I will try a few last possible solutions: - do a PMU reset and replace the PRAM battery *anyone ever use the PMU Reset button on the G3, situated near the Cuda switch? Any use? - check all 4 RAM banks one by one - reset the G4 Zif - try a different processor (G3 Zif, though unfortunately I don't have the original) Any other suggestions greatly appreciated.
