yes, both internet exploiter and navigator both keep cookies, a cache of recent pages (so you can access them more readily), and a history and cache log. on the mac with netscape, they are all visible files and can be deleted.
what i've done (i use netscape), is to use a locked folder for cookies (this lets it keep them in ram, but they aren't saved to disk when you shut down or quite netscape, and for the history file, well, it's a little more tricky, i have a zero size file that's locked in it's place. i'd be happy to email it to anyone. i'll check my setup later but this is most of it. i also have my firewall and webfree set to block advertising pages and the tracking that comes with them. i also have a dialup with a dynamic ip, if your on a cable modem you probably have a static ip, that means everytime you get on the net people (mostly advertisers and junk mailers/callers/spammers) can track you from site to site if they are cooperating with each other. having said that, i also have an external modem, and have still seen and stopped 2 incursion attempts through my dialup line. a firewall is a very worthy investment. (for any paranoid, not that the term is easy to define in the real world). note also that files are often easy to retain, but there are several mac programs to do real data destruction. i also use my ram disk for cache, both for speed and it's temporary nature. really though, if you are truly paranoid, the emissions of most monitors are trivial to pickup from across the street or down the block, at least for someone with a little electronics knowledge and a spare monitor and pre-amp lying around. for general invisible file cleanup, i use file buddy, shareware.
