He's wrong. Autosensing just modifies the electrical connection on the 
item being plugged in to match what is needed.

I've plugged my TiPB into the following with no difficulties:

3400 (normal cable)
Netgear 314 router (crossover cable) (all I had at the time...)
8500 (normal cable)
G4/733 (normal cable)

Enjoy your Ti... it's really quite a nice machine.
