Wow - the disparity between the US and the UK is quite large it seems. PCs
are way cheaper here and, if anything, Macs are much more expensive.

There are several laptops floating around from Sony, Toshiba and Fujitsu
that are all under 1000 (the price of an iBook) and are reasonably
comparable, if you added FireWire to them it'd about be even.

In a recent lecture Ted Nelson - a founding father of modern computing,
put to us a question of scaling:

Ted: "What happens if everyone and everything in a room is suddenly scaled
up by 10 in every dimension?"
Response: "Well everything is 10 times the size so nothing will be any
different"
Ted: "Well yes. But you'd have already collapsed."
Response: "How so?"
Ted: "Well the human body would not be strong enough to cope with the
weight. If you increase a 3 dimensional volume (a person for example) by
ten times you get 1000 times the original volume (10x10x10). But human
strength is proportional to the cross sectional area of the body's muscles,
which only, as it is 2 dimensional, increases by 100 times (10x10) so the
person would only have one tenth the strength necessary. This would mean
you'd collapse under your own weight, see? Also the surface area fo your
lungs, as a 2 dimensional area, would only increase by 100 times meaning
you would suffocate"
Response: "Oh"
