I've only been following the Mac OS "new version ate my Buick"
discussions since System 7, but every release seems to be the worst
thing since anthrax for someone. Look at the archives at MacFixIt...
There's probably a bit of truth to most of the reports -- 8.6 really
does corrupt older Type 1 fonts, for example. But, if the problem is
widespread, Apple and others always post fixes or workarounds (or, a new
version release appears quickly). Apple and at least 2 others
distributed 8.6 font fixes. (And, look how quick they were to fix the
iTunes 2 installer.) 9.2.1, itself, is a fix for the limited release of
9.2. But, it's been out for 3 months and nothing from anyone.

For me, 9.2.1 is better than 9.1; it's quicker about a number of things,
especially running programs that use CarbonLib. It's faster than 9.1
that's been updated with the most recent CarbonLib GA version, 1.4. As
for large files, what does that mean, nowadays? I built a CD-ROM using
primarily 9.2.1 with files that were at various times on drives residing
on several Macs (and even a Windows 98 machine) on my home and at work
networks and across the internet. The finished image file was around 350
MB and the CD was distributed to 8000 physician offices and facilities
around the state. There was a whole lot of copying going on. I've yet to
find any evidence of data corruption in the finished product or any of
the source files*.

*Well, not quite true... I did most of the work at home due to perennial
data corruption problems with our NT network at the office. But, that's
another matter and not at all related to 9.2.1.
