I'd guess some just use it because it was so engrained from before (ie, you
did get much better performance than with apple's driver)... I do know that
with specialized drivers you can set your drive up just the way you need it
(changing block sizes depending on the different kinds of media you work
with, etc) and RAID solutions, etc...

But I don�t think the average person uses them much anymore... Least I don�t
know anyone or seen it in awhile (cept for a printer I consult for which has
older comps)
