I did the same with the middle button when I used the MacAlly UniMouse.

I like USB Overdrive better for general use, but one thing I liked about the
Mouseware s/w, and that is when you hold the Shift key and then use the scroll
wheel it will scroll horizontally.

Yep, had the same problem on a beige MT with USB card. The guy who installed
the USB card had installed the USB s/w which came with the card. I trashed all
that and installed Apple USB Card Support 1.4.1 and from then I didn't have to
unplug and plug it back in again.

You can give it a try. Don't forget to disable the MouseWare s/w first
(MouseWare cp, MouseWare Extension and USB MouseWare Extension).
