This is one of my favorite topics cuz I always am open to learning new things about this process.
I purchased a small, simple pre-amp at Circuit City a couple yrs ago when I first stepped into recording LPs to CD. I paid $40 for, they may still have them if you've got a Circuit City in your area. Have to say, it's the only time I ventured in to one. I agree w/everyone else in that it sounds like an open ground problem. You're not going to blow anything up by trying to fix Dominic offered re. the alligator clips to check for the ground. Sometimes I think electronics manufacturers have to put those skull and crossbones warnings on equip to protect themselves from lawsuits more then to protect consumers. I'd sure give it a go and find a way to ground the darned thing. I've got my turntable grounded to my amp via a wire that exits out the back of the turntable... and I could see how that wire could get pulled out or broken off, and then look like there's no place to ground the turntable.
