Your description of recording the player piano suggests to me that your cheap Tandy/Radio Snack mic is not cutting the mustard. I would suggest their PZM mic, which is still relatively inexpensive, and gives quite good results. It's a big square flat thing. I would suggest taping it inside the lid of the piano, facing the strings, with the lid part open. If you use a pair for left and right, try positioning them a fair way apart on the piano to capture all the strings evenly, and to give a more interesting stereo image.
That's assuming you can solve your clipping problem :-) A cheap mixer with input trims is probably the way to go, and would serve you well with any other recording projects you might endeavour in the future.
