(X-Post to Mac-Mgrs List)
Greetings all:

I'm tempted to use the term "cluster-****" in this circumstance, but I'll
see if anyone can pull one out of their hat.

Boss's PowerBook G3 (Bronze, no FW), MacOSX 10.1.3, 9.2.2 (on two separate
partitions):

1) Tried to load Classic to launch Entourage. Classic environment crashes
with "File System Map Inconsistent" error. Restart with Shift Key, no
effect.

2) Apple-ROM CD Drive not working. Unsure if this is related or not. He said
it did come up momentarily and then froze this morning, and now it makes
ugly grinding noises.

3) Startup Disk setting recognizes 9.2.2 System Folder. Choose it as default
startup disk, reboot, to try and force the CDROM to be recognized. Tries to
boot into 9.2.2, crashes with same error.

4) Reboot, option key held down to choose system to boot into. No dice --
still goes into 9.2.2 and crashes.

5) Try to go into Single user mode using Cmd-S on startup. Same as 4.

6) Boot into Open Firmware. "reset-all" and reboot. Same as 4.

7) Reboot, holding down Cmd-Opt-Shift-Delete (both with and without CD in
drive). Flashing folder until release, then boots into 9.2.2 and crashes --
again.

The only other thing that changed in the meantime was we installed
SystemWorks 2.0 into OS X and restarted, no problems. Ran on the OS9
partition, found a bunch of problems (usual culprits, nothing bizarre).

I'm stumped. I'm going to go home and get a SCSI-HDI adapter, so we can try
and boot into SCSI disk mode to toss a new system on there, but other than
that, I'm at a loss.

Any takers?

TIA

Lincoln
